Grocery Run (Part 2)

The duo moved through the produce section and then on to the butchers section of the store. Miranda was going to order from the butcher himself but considering that Ellie seemingly already caught his eye Miranda was fine grabbing some cold cut packages. Ellie pouted the entire time after the deviation until she decided that it wasn't worth the effort and thought conversation might make the whole time go by faster.

"So you don't like your Mom, huh?" Ellie's tail swings idly as she watches Miranda compare two different loaves of bread. Miranda can tell by the tone that Ellie isn't try to start anything so keeps her focus on the bread.

"No, I like my Mom. It is just that we are different people. I love her but we just couldn't see eye to eye on things." Miranda explains to Ellie and then considers how much she should even get into the subject. Miranda really didn't know exactly how she felt about her Mom or even why. It also occurred to her that Ellie might not be the best person to explain this sort of thing to.

"Like what? Isn't she not religious or something? You said something in the car one time about that." Ellie asked as her attention shifted to the person that was pushing a grocery cart past them, there was a pack of yogurt in a tube that caught Ellie's eye.

"Oh yeah, I did say something about that." Miranda pauses for a moment remember her celebration and how she exclaimed 'suck it, mom', "Yeah, that has always been one of those things. It is just...hmm." Miranda looks at the bread in front of her and crooks her head to side as she tries to figure out the words. While she does this Ellie leans over and swipes the yogurt tubes from the cart and as the man is about to reacts she looks at him, utters the demon tongue, and the man has a dumb smile come across his face. Ellie shoots a playful smile to him and puts a single finger over her mouth to mime for him to be quiet, he quickly nods and happily goes on his way.

"It just always felt like she supports but doesn't agree with it. That is what a good Mom should do, and she is a good Mom. It just always feels like there is a weird superiority she has whenever it gets brought up." Miranda sighs to herself and finally picks the whole wheat bread as Ellie has opened up one of the yogurt tubes. Ellie notices Miranda finishing her choice and downs the whole tube as fast as possible. Having the rest of the pack in her hand, and no idea how to hide it from Miranda, ends up panicking and tossing it over the bread isle into the next isle over. Miranda places the bread into the grocery cart and looks up to Ellie looking suspiciously innocent.

"Ellie, did you do something?" Miranda already has doubt on her face.

"No, I was just listening to you talk about how your Mom doesn't get religion." Ellie has a little smile on her face and her tail has ceased all movement.

"She gets religion, I think. I told you it is complicated. You probably already know how it is with family, I can't imagine how demon families must be." Miranda chuckles a bit at her considerations on the subject of 'demon families'. Ellie's reaction was one of uncertainty which caught Miranda off guard.

"Haha, yeah. Totally." Ellie says trying to add some levity to shake off the discomfort of the scenario.

"Wait... do demon's not have families?" Miranda leans on the grocery cart as the revelation hits her.

"I don't even think we have parents. Like, we kind of just are." Ellie shrugs making her uncertainty about the whole situation apparent.

"Oh, I didn't mean to make you feel bad about it or anything. It is just really weird to think that you don't have any family... like, you don't have any loved ones in hell?" Miranda is completely baffled by all of this.

"There are no friends in hell." Ellie says in a resentful tone before lightening up, "It's strange for me to think about too, I don't really dwell on it much. From what I have heard though it seems like I am not really missing out on much." Ellie laughs a little and Miranda is able to calm down after that.

"Yeah, I guess not." Miranda takes a look at the list, "We just need to grab some milk and then I think we are good."

"Lead the way." Ellie jimmies the cart a bit to get the wheel unstuck before Miranda started walking further down the isles. Once they enter the cool air of the refrigerated dairy section Ellie, who is once again leaning on the cart to push it looks over at Miranda for a moment and takes a moment to think.

"So, ummm... so you and your Dad are cool, right?" Ellie asks having Miranda look back a bit in surprise. Ellie simply looking curious back at her makes Miranda feel comfortable enough to start talking about family again.

"Oh, well. Yeah, we are cool. Always have been, honestly." Miranda smiles as she remembers various moments she has shared with her father, "He has always been the calm center of the family. He's always listened to me, about anything. He actually wanted me to go into nursing if you can believe it." Miranda chuckles to herself before she notices coffee creamer on the shelf they were walking by and grabs one of them.

"Nursing, huh. I can see it." Ellie has a little smirk, " You can wear those sexy scrubs and you can wear those latex gloves that snap when you put them on, you got to admit that is some hot shit." Miranda looks back and frowns at Ellie, "Oh, umm. Yeah, I think that you would probably be a good nurse... or something." Miranda let's out an disapproving grumble before continuing talking.

"Well, he was still happy when I became an officer. I think he would have been happy no matter what I did. Just feels like he just had a lot of trust in me." Miranda continues as they approach the milk shelves. Ellie having got somewhat bored of the conversation has pulled the pack of gum out of her pocket and, upon opening it, sees that she is down to her last stick. There is a small annoyed look that she gives it before taking it out, unwrapping it, and popping it in her mouth. Meanwhile, Miranda is checking dates on the various milk cartons.

"I remember this time that for my birthday he tried to build me a backyard playground. He has never been good with his hands, I think he broke his thumb twice from hitting it with a hammer before giving up. He eventually settled for making a sandbox." Miranda chuckles to herself, "He really did try, I think my Mom used the rest of the wood to surround her garden. Man, now I am thinking about the veggies she used to grow. She actually made homemade pasta sauce."

"Huh, your Mom sounds practical... and useful." Ellie says through the sound of her gum chewing.

"Well she grew up in a smaller town and she also did a lot of field work for studies and what not. I don't think I told you but she was a biologist. She wasn't really the lab research sort either, she sat on the adventurous side of science." Miranda finds a carton of milk with a suitable best before date and shimmies around some of the groceries in the cart to place it in a good spot.

"Your Mom sounds hot." Ellie absent mindedly states

"Ellie! Don't be horny about my parents!" Miranda points at Ellie who puts her hands up in defense of herself.

"I'm bored and when I get bored I get horny." Ellie states this as if it is a fact of life.

"Ellie, you are horny all of the time." Miranda retorts with an unimpressed look.

"Well, you do a lot of boring stuff!" Ellie has her arms out to either side as she shrugs. An older couple walks by and keep their head turned to see what they presume to be a lesbian couple argue about being bored and horny. Miranda notices and shoots them an annoyed look. They pick up their pace and turn into the nearest isle. Miranda sighs and composes herself.

"Alright, the milk was the last thing on the list. We can go and give you something better to do than tell me which family members of mine you think are hot." Miranda explains but Ellie has a playful smirk the whole time.

"I mean, that sounds pretty fun to me." Ellie's tail sways about as she watches for Miranda's reaction. Miranda simply closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and starts walking down the isle. Ellie laughs to herself at the reaction and then starts following.

As they both turn around the isles there is an announcement over the speakers. "Clean up in isle 5, Clean up in isle 5"

Ellie giggles to herself as she sees one of the employees walk a mop and bucket over to the isle past them. Miranda looks over at Ellie, knowing that she has something to do with that but at this point they are in sight of the cash so Miranda let's it slide.

It took a few attempts but Ellie was able to get the lopsided cart into position at the cash. As Ellie fought the cart Miranda and the cash attendant simply watched her with unimpressed, neutral expressions. Miranda sighs and starts placing the various groceries on the track. As she gets through to the end Ellie remembers that she is due two candy bars. She looks over the various options and opts for a Jupiter bar and some 7 gum and tosses it on the track to get scanned. Miranda though picks up the gum and looks over at Ellie.

"Ellie, I said two candy bars." Miranda holds the gum as if it is evidence.

"Yeah, and those are my two choices." Ellie is confused about the problem.

"Gum isn't a candy bar." Miranda states.

"But it is in the same place as them, it counts." Ellie gestures over to the various bars and gum beside the cash.

"It doesn't count because it isn't a bar, just choose something else." Miranda offers the gum back to Ellie who crosses her arms in reaction.

"No, I am out of gum and it totally counts. You said I get two if I behaved and I behaved." Ellie is pouting now regarding the situation.

"CANDY BARS, ELLIE! TWO CANDY BARS!" Miranda raises her voice at the now pouting Ellie. The cash attendant stares off into space as two grown women argue, she knows that it totally counts but is not getting involved.

"Fine... you get your gum." Miranda tosses it on the track flippantly and Ellie switches from pouting to beaming in a moment. Once the gum and candy bar was scanned they make their way through the parking lot. After Ellie has an over dramatic goodbye to the broken grocery cart they are both in the car.

"Hey, is that smoothie you offered still on the table?" Miranda asks as she buckles up.

"Totally." Ellie has a little smile at the prospect.
