"Hey Ellie..." Miranda asked in a curious tone once the cop car had come to a stop at the red light. The bronze skinned succubus in the passengers seat looked up from her phone with disinterest.
"Yeah?" Ellie responded at her own leisure. Her tail lightly swayed beside her as she waited for whatever heavily thought out question that she knew that Miranda was going to ask her.
"So, I was thinking about it..." Miranda said in a thoughtful manner as she watched the traffic move through the intersection.
"As you do..." Ellie muttered with an eye roll before going back to swiping right on her phone.
"Yes, well. I was thinking about why do demons always use latin? Like, is there something special or magical about the language? Was that the first language that demons encountered and then just assumed that every human spoke that? Like it just seems super weird that..." Miranda was beginning to rattle off every thought that she had on the matter. Ellie sighed, frowned a little, and then sat up straight in the chair before looking over at Miranda. Ellie waited a little before she stopped the stream of consciousness dialogue that Miranda was engaging in.
"We don't just use latin." Ellie stated bluntly mid statement by Miranda.
"I mean, Rome isn't dead but it might as well...Wait, what..." Miranda only half heard what Ellie said and had to mentally double back to try and pick up on it. Ellie went back to casually swiping right on her phone as she continued to explain.
"We don't just use latin. That is just some bullshit from movies and crappy paper backs from corner stores. We use the language that suits who we are interacting with. If someone summons us and wants to engage in the 'esoteric mysticism of the dark arts'" this was said with air quotes from her free hand, "or some crap then we break out the latin because it suits the performance. If you are just looking to get some souls on the cheap though you are going to need to communicate with them. Hard to get someone to sell their soul if you can't even say hello." Ellie was rather animated in her speech with frequent eye rolls to emphasize her point. The whole time she barely looked up at Miranda. Miranda, however, was nodding and considering every point that was made, "Like, I know a bunch of languages. Been posted all over the god damn place."
"Wait, how many languages do you know?" Miranda was surprised that Ellie would have taken the time to learn multiple languages or even had to in the first place.
"Uhhhh, about like six or maybe 7... I am pretty rusty so I am not going to break them out for your amusement." Ellie pointed a finger at Miranda to emphasize the point that she is not in the mood to entertain.
"Alright, I wasn't going to ask you..." Miranda kept her eyes on the road as the light had changed in the hopes that Ellie would not have noticed that she was definitely going to ask her to speak in other languages, "It is weird that you don't just have some demon hell magic that lets you just talk to anyone. Like, ya know the tongues of fire in the bible?"
"The what?" Ellie looks over for a moment with a single eyebrow raised
"Ya know, Leviticus? The Holy Spirit at Pentecost? The Jews able to speak to one another in tongues?" At every question Miranda paused to look over at Ellie briefly to see if she understood what she was talking about but continually was met with a growing confusion on Ellie's face.
"The only tongue of fire I know of is something you definitely don't want to hear about. On that note, do you think this guy is hot?" Ellie points the phone over to Miranda who is now the confused one. Miranda looks over at the phone to see a tinder profile of some guy.
"I guess, like... I am sure he is someone's type... Ellie, is that a tinder profile?" Miranda asks realizing the oddity of the question.
"Just looking for a date for you, figured a double date thing would be fun and get you out of the house." Ellie said going back to swiping on her phone. Miranda was left flabbergasted with her mouth open in shock.
"Ellie! You can't just set me up with random people because you want to go on a date!" Miranda yelled at Ellie who flinched at the noise then just looked annoyed.
"Alright, alright... so would just be fine with a swinger couple? You can have the guy if you..." Ellie was cut off once Miranda was able to collect herself to form a sentence
"NO COUPLES! NO SEXY DUDES OR LADIES! NOTHING!" Miranda yelled at Ellie, her knuckles were white from how hard she was gripping the wheel out of frustration. Ellie winced and shifted away again from Miranda as she yelled.
"Alright, alright." Ellie raised her hands to show Miranda that she meant no harm, "I'm sorry, I thought it would be cute or something. Figured you could use a girl's night out..." Ellie had a sly grin creep across her face, "But you do think he was sexy right?" Ellie knowingly was poking the bear with that last statement.
"Ellie, don't" Miranda raised a single finger towards Ellie, whose sly grin was still curled across her face, and spoke in a cold tone. Ellie knew that pushing this any further, as fun as it would be, would not help her in the long run. Ellie instead closed the app, slid the phone into her pocket, and then leaned back into the chair with both of her hands behind her head.
"Alright, so what were we talking about before you shot down the date night idea?" Ellie asked Miranda who had visibly eased up just from hearing that the conversation was moving forward. Miranda pondered for a moment before replying.
"Ummm, oh yeah. Tongues of fire and demon being able to talk different languages" Miranda nodded as she spoke and it was obvious her head was once again filled with ideas on the subject.
"Right, yeah. I don't know about that tongue's of fire stuff but I do know that there is magic that some demons use to just talk to people, a few even do telepathy from what I heard." Ellie's words fell out of her mouth idly as she had her eyes on sidewalk watching the various people as they drove through the city.
"Wait, you can talk to people using your mind?" Miranda was puzzled and then a look of concern came across her face as the realization dawned on her "Wait wait wait, have you been reading my mind?!" Miranda gave a sideways glance to Ellie, unsure if she was reading her mind at that very moment.
"Umm, no. Sort of, like I can sort of get a hunch about people's desires and stuff but not much past that. It is kind of a lot of guess work and people skills." Ellie shrugs and goes back to people watching.
"Oh, well that is good. So, can you do that 'talk to anyone' magic stuff?" Miranda asks
"Uh, no. If I could I wouldn't have had to learn 7 damn languages..." Ellie was getting mildly frustrated, her tail was flicking up and down on to the chair.
"Wow. You really can't do much, huh?" Miranda has a small frown on her face.
"Oh, that is a nice thing to say." Ellie sarcastically snaps at Miranda. Miranda winces at the realization of what she said.
"No, Ellie. I didn't mean it like that... I just meant..." Miranda looked over to a very annoyed Ellie looking back, "I mean... I'm sorry."
"Yeah, whatever." Ellie crosses her arms and stares out the passenger side window, "Just tell me when we get to wherever we are going."
The rest of the travel was done in an awkward silence as Miranda tapped on the wheel trying to think of how to solve the problem she created and Ellie too caught up in her own thoughts to even try.
